That period of time was transformative for young minds. I also had a crush on Diver Dan, even though i don't remember being able to see his face, but he was so serious and cerebral. Mostly, in retrospect, he reminds me of the protagonist of the Roads to Freedom trilogy by Sartre, the guy who randomly goes to fight in the Spanish Civil war. His diving suit makes him an "other" since everyone else just lives down there. I thought the mermaid was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen except for my mother (maybe I was 8 or 9?) and there was a shady barracuda who swam around making trouble with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth. Truly some of the finest tv ever made.
When the boys got together to make the perfect woman in "Weird Science" and it was Kelly LeBrock, I just assumed the movie became a defacto documentary.
Love this appreciation for Alicia Silverstone's moxie.
Kurt Russell in The Travels of Jamie McPheeters, (1963-1964) ( was around 9) and I also loved Johnnie Quest.
Kurt Russell is a good one! <3
